HERDSA Community: From Invisible to Competitive: Promotion Insights for International Academics
International Academics SIG | 12 June 2026
Navigating academic promotion can be particularly complex for international academics, who often face additional barriers related to visibility, recognition, and differing institutional expectations. In a recent HERDSA International Academics Special Interest Group (SIG) session, presenters Linda Ng, Jason Wong, and Jasvir Kaur shared practical strategies drawn from their session “Promotion Tips: From Invisible to Competitive.” The discussion offered actionable insights to help academics move from being overlooked to being recognised as strong promotion candidates.

The CAULLT / HERDSA Award for Outstanding Leadership in Research and Development in Higher Education

The Award
The CAULLT / HERDSA award for Outstanding Leadership in Research and Development in Higher Education recognises evidence of innovative and effective leadership in higher education.
Evidence of innovative and effective leadership should be provided to support one of the following areas of leadership:
- Leadership in professional learning: The individual or team has demonstrated leadership in the creation or re-development of a program of professional learning that has positively impacted the quality of teaching or the learning environment. For example, they developed a professional learning program for sessional staff that was proven to enhance student learning.
- Leadership in the scholarship of learning and teaching: The individual or team has effectively led others in enhancing and producing their own scholarship of learning and teaching outputs. For example, they co-developed a new framework for synthesis and dissemination of evidence-based practice assessments across providers.
- Leadership in collaboration and partnership: The individual or team has fostered collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders in the higher education community. For example, they developed solutions through partnerships with other educational institutions, government agencies, or industry partners etc.
- Leadership in governance: The individual or team has lead policy and/or procedures that has had a measurable impact. For example, they developed a set of discipline procedures which ensured better provision of WIL in courses and consequently higher employment rates for students post-graduation).
- Leadership in the enhancement of teaching and learning: The individual or team has effectively led others in enhancing teaching and learning practice. For example, they designed a pedagogical practice that measurably increased student achievement across a course of study.
- Leadership in inclusion: The individual or team has developed and/or promoted inclusive practice that has measurably improved student experience. For example, they developed a whole institutional universal design program.
- Leadership development: The individual or team has developed programs or processes that support leadership development in learning and teaching. For example, they have developed a program for women leaders at their institution.

CRADLE Seminar Series: ‘Are you afraid of the doubt? Educator uncertainty in fully online programs’
Wednesday 15 July – 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm (AEST)
Can doubt ever be eliminated from education? Or does uncertainty have a valuable role to play in teaching - especially in online programs? Register now for CRADLE's seminar on 15 July to hear Curtin University's Professor Mollie Dollinger unpack what educator uncertainty means for fully online programs in an age of generative AI.
Many of the approaches adopted by higher education institutions in response to the challenges of generative AI are intended to offer educators a measure of certainty: that what we outline, mark, and credential rests on solid ground. Yet education cannot be undertaken without doubt and, while we can design for greater certainty and assurances, doubt is not a feeling we can avoid – and nor is it without value. To doubt is to be honest about the limitations of what we can teach, and what we can claim to know of students' learning. This is particularly relevant to fully online programs, which offer students crucial pathways to equitable access but are also where doubt runs sharpest. The real provocation for educators is not whether we can eliminate doubt from our teaching, but whether we are willing to confront it, to speak it, and to recognise where it has a place.

CSHE Seminar: What now for the Enterprise University? Institutional autonomy in an age of increasing government intervention

More than a quarter-century has passed since the publication of Simon Marginson and Mark Considine’s pivotal book, The Enterprise University, which described the ways in which Australian universities had adapted to the market-like conditions that governments put in place during the 1980s and 1990s.
In recent years governments in Australia have become ever more interventionist, with a wide range of agencies expanding their role in regulating how universities operate.
This seminar will feature a keynote presentation from Professor Simon Marginson (University of Oxford) followed by an expert panel who will explore alternatives to the ‘market model’ that preserve university autonomy as governments worldwide are seeking to intervene more directly:
