The HERDSA International Academics (IA) SIG hosted an inspiring presentation with Associate Professor Poh Wah Hillock, recipient of the 2022 Australian University Teacher of the Year Award. The presentation explored her teaching journey and the principles that underpin impactful, student-centred learning.

A central message was that award-winning teaching is not defined by individual performance alone. Rather, it involves creating learning environments in which students feel supported, valued, included, and empowered to succeed. Associate Professor Hillock emphasised the importance of building genuine relationships with students, understanding their diverse learning needs, and fostering a strong sense of belonging.

Drawing on her extensive experience teaching first-year mathematics, she shared examples of how intentional support structures, collaborative learning opportunities, and timely academic interventions can enhance student engagement and achievement. Her approach challenges the assumption that academic ability is fixed and instead promotes the belief that all students can succeed when provided with appropriate support, encouragement, and opportunities to build confidence.

Innovation and creativity were also key themes of the presentation.
