HERDSA Closed Door Event for Academic Developers at Singapore Universities
29th September 2pm to 4pm (UTC+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore

A key development in supporting university students to be future ready and to move away from grades is to 1) define key transferable skills that all students should achieve and 2) support them in developing, assessing and sharing their achievements in these skills. Based on our understanding, this would be a key area that the ministry would be pushing next year.

This session aims to discuss and debate on the roles faculty developers play in this movement as well as the challenges and opportunities we face. Mr Lim Fun Siong (Nanyang Technological University) and Dr Magdeleine Lew (Singapore Management University) will be sharing on the progress of their universities’ work on this front to enrich and stimulate our discussions.

This closed door event is hosted by the Nanyang Technological University's annual Good to Great Conference.

HERDSA national webinar series:Increasing student engagement, satisfaction and learning through pre-class activities
Thursday 11th November 2021 12.00-1.00pm AEST

Student preparation for in-class practical experiences enables students to confidently and competently apply theory to practical activities. Despite developing quality preparatory resources, most students were choosing not to engage. Associate Professor Jennifer Wilson therefore repackaged the resources into a series of gamified, online, adaptive, laboratory preparatory modules (GOAL-PMs) to successfully increase student engagement, satisfaction and learning in her Biochemistry course laboratory sessions as measured by system metrics, student survey and focus groups. The GOAL-PMs supported deeper learning with students asking conceptual questions (e.g., “why?”) during class instead of procedural questions (e.g. “how do I do this?”). Associate Professor Wilson has expanded this approach into her course content and other courses at student request. The GOAL-PM intervention promotes improved preparation and performance for classes requiring prior knowledge. Register at https://www.herdsa.org.au/herdsa-webinar-series

Registration is now open for the 2021 National Students as Partners Roundtable
Tues 23rd Nov - Thurs 25th November 2021

The Roundtable is an annual event for both staff and students interested in learning about student-staff partnership across a range of university practices from teaching and learning, and curriculum development, to student governance, research, and student services. It’s an opportunity for any staff or student across the tertiary sector to learn, harness, share, celebrate and ask critical questions about what student-staff partnership does for 'student-hood' more generally, and our work as teachers, researchers, educators, administrators and leaders.

This year, the 21C Student Curriculum Partners (SCPs) at Western Sydney University (with Dr Tai Peseta) are hosting the Roundtable. They have crafted an exciting program focused on a provocative theme: The Partnership Paradox.

When: Tuesday 23rd – Thursday 25th November 2021
Where: Online on Zoom and MS Teams
Cost: It’s free

Registration is now open.

There is still time for you to submit a Partnership Case Study (submissions close October 1). We are inviting case studies of student-staff partnership on the following:
• Teaching, Learning, Assessment and Curriculum
• Engaging Students in Research (including undergraduate research)
• Co-or extra-curricula programs and initiatives (student services/engagement)
• Approaches to student academic governance
• Academic and/or educational development
• Theoretical and conceptual challenges to Partnership

Register for the National SAP Roundtable at https://www.saproundtable21.com.
Follow the updates to the program on twitter #SAPRtable21
We look forward to welcoming you to the Roundtable.

Reminder | Invitation To Participate | Early Assessment Practices In First Year University

Dear Colleagues,

There's still time to take part in this research to share your experiences with designing and/or implementing early assessment tasks in first-year university in Australia. Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far, we really appreciate your generosity.

With the increasing diversity in the first-year cohort in universities globally, emphasis has been placed on using early low-stakes assessment tasks to transition students into academia and improve retention rates. While the practice of incorporating early assessment tasks in higher education may be common, there are large gaps in the literature around assessment design, purpose, support, timing and feedback provided to students.

We are seeking people with experience designing and implementing early assessment practices in Australian higher education to participate in this research. Past and current staff members of higher education institutions are encouraged to take part in this study, including staff from academic, professional, leadership and support roles. As someone with understanding of early assessment practices your experiences and opinions on early assessment tasks is extremely beneficial to this study and its practical outcomes.

The main objective of this research is to develop a Typology of Early Assessment Tasks and associated Principles of Good Practice to be shared across the sector.

Your participation is voluntary and completely anonymous. If you choose to participate, please expect to spend approximately 20 minutes to complete this survey. A Participant Information Sheet, which provides more detail about the study, can be found at the beginning of the online survey.

LINK TO SURVEY: https://www.research.net/r/EAPyr1

Please share this survey with colleagues and peers with experience designing and implementing early assessment practices in Australian higher education.

If you have any questions about this study, please do not hesitate to contact me:
