Invitation – from HERDSA 2024 conference presentation to ASHRE journal publication

Eva, Michelle and Geof and Jo (ASRHE editors) invite all presenters listed in the HERDSA 2024 program to submit a paper based on your research to our HERDSA journal, Advancing Scholarship and Research in Higher Education. We welcome conceptual, qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies, written for an international audience, and innovative ways of presenting research and non-traditional forms of academic communication. Approaches to teaching and engaging students from refugee backgrounds in Enabling Programs
When:
Wednesday, 22nd May 2024
Time:  1.00 – 2.00 pm (Qld)
Format: TEAMS online

Register through this link: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/20bb5dc2-c2e3-478e-8453-1055aaa...@fdade0c4-3fea-4320-ae53-1a1742aeff1e

Join Tamra Ulpen, Dr Snjezana Bilic, Dr Heidi Hetz and Dr Victoria Wilson as they share their experiences with culturally responsive pedagogies.

Abstract: Students from refugee backgrounds (SfRBs) are entering Australian universities in increasing numbers, often via university pathway programs (enabling programs), often accessing them through university pathway programs, or enabling programs. Research has shown how higher education establishments have been slow to tailor support to the specific needs of SfRBs (Joyce et al., 2010; Lenette, 2016; Baker & Ramsey 2019) or improve their retention and progression in higher education (Kong et al., 2016; Molla, 2020). The workshop will introduce you to culturally responsive pedagogies and how they complement enabling pedagogies. We will then share research findings from a UniSA College based project that explored best practice approaches for teaching students from refugee backgrounds in the enabling space. The findings are drawn from conversations with academics and refugee-background students. In the second part of the workshop, we will explore trauma-informed pedagogies. We argue that the educational achievements of SfRBs can be enhanced when academic and peer support staff are responsive to the educational and socio-cultural experiences of students in the enabling spaces and the wider university.

CRADLE Seminar Series - Evaluative judgement, AI, and authentic assessment for university and beyond
2pm, 29 May 2024

In this seminar Professor Margaret Bearman and Dr Joanna Tai explore the impacts of current developments in AI and assessment practices, and its relationship to evaluative judgement and authentic assessment.
How assessment at university prepares students for the world beyond graduation has been a focus of higher education research for many years, but recent developments such as generative artificial intelligence have shifted these concerns front and centre. This seminar explores two approaches to assessment that emphasise its relevance in a digital world. We argue that evaluative judgement, the capability to judge the quality of work of self and others, becomes crucial in a time where AI outputs will be commonplace. Assessment practices must therefore support students to develop evaluative judgement in relationship to genAI. We then to turn to explore authentic assessment – regarded as a panacea to many dilemmas including those relating to AI. However, mimicking existing work and the 'real' world becomes an insufficient frame in rapidly developing contexts. Broadening perspectives on authenticity and operationalising it through design practices offer ways forward for assessment to meet current and future needs.
Join us for this compelling and this topical presentation at Deakin Downtown or online.

National study: Perceptions and use of GenerativeAI among university students

We are conducting a national survey to investigate the use of GenerativeAI among Australian university students. If you are engaged in the education and support of students at an Australian university, you are in a unique position to contribute to the success of this study.

Despite models like ChatGPT bursting into Higher Education in November 2022, the extent to which students are utilising GenerativeAI in their learning is poorly understood. This national survey of Australian students will offer valuable insights into how GenerativeAI is shaping our learners. Students are invited to share their views of GenerativeAI in response to provocative prompts, hypothetical situations, and the use of GenerativeAI in assessment preparation.

To compensate students for their time, they may choose to enter a draw to win one of 20 Coles gift cards (valued at $50).

Students interested in participating in the study can follow this link: https://adelaideuniwide.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_79x2JkoFRoEFEbA

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at samantha.newell@adelaide.edu.au. This research study has been approved by The University of Adelaide’s School of Psychology Low Risk Ethics Subcommittee (HREC: H-2024-0024).
