HERDSA WEBINAR: Student and Staff Engagement with Generative AI: Opportunities for Roleplaying and Professional Development
Friday 20th September, 2024 1.00-2.00pm AEST
Student and Staff Engagement with Generative AI: Opportunities for Roleplaying and Professional Development
Presenter: Dr. James Tsatsaronis, La Trobe University
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has dominated headlines and conversations in higher education for nearly the past 2 years. Two important topics are often brought up when discussing GenAI in teaching: identifying valid use cases for this technology, and improving the GenAI literacy of staff. This presentation will discuss findings from a project evaluating student perceptions of using GenAI powered chatbots for roleplay learning activities using the Cogniti platform and also describe progress and some reflections on efforts to improve the GenAI literacy of teaching staff at La Trobe University. This session will include time for Q&A and general discussion.

CRADLE Seminar Series: Is it time to rethink the role of high-stakes examinations in university subjects?
11 September 2.00-3.30pm
In this seminar Melbourne University's Dr Sarah French, Senior Lecturer in Education, and Prof Raoul Mulder, Professor of Evolutionary Ecology in the School of BioSciences and Professor of Higher Education, unpack the very timely questions relating to the future of high-stake assessments.
High-stakes final examinations are widely used as summative assessments in university subjects, and the advent of Generative AI is spurring calls for even greater use of such assessments. In this seminar, we review and evaluate arguments and empirical evidence in the academic literature for and against their deployment as assessment tools in higher education. Perceived academic benefits of high-stakes examinations include their ability to test knowledge recall, motivate study, demonstrate performance under pressure in the absence of information, and their potential to safeguard academic integrity. From a logistical and resource perspective, summative examinations also are cost-effective to administer.
Nevertheless, high-stakes summative examinations have significant pedagogical drawbacks. These include concerns about their reliability and validity, their lack of real-world authenticity and relevance, their limited capacity to assess deep learning, their contribution to elevated psychological distress, and their potential to generate academic inequity as a result of gender- or ethnicity-based differences in performance. We conclude that the current heavy reliance on high-stakes assessments is poorly justified by the balance of empirical evidence. While well-designed examinations remain potentially valid assessment tools as part of a diversified assessment regime, we suggest that careful consideration be given to whether they should be retained, redesigned, reweighed or replaced.

2024 CRADLE International Symposium - Expert Panel Event - How could generative AI change work-integrated learning?
2,30pm (AEDT) Wednesday, 9 October 2024
This year’s CRADLE International Symposium ‘How could generative AI change work-integrated learning?’ seeks to unpack current and timely research questions surrounding artificial intelligence and its role and impact with higher education and work. As a pivotal highlight of the Symposium program we are pleased to invite you to attend an exciting interactive public panel event.
AI is starting to fundamentally change the nature of both work and learning. What about learning through work? Many questions present themselves in a climate of simultaneous opportunities, dilemmas, and hazards: How will generative AI shift relationships between students, university educators and workplaces? How can approaches to workplace learning be reconsidered in light of generative AI? What might be the roles of generative AI in workplace assessment and feedback practices?
Facilitated by CRADLE's Prof Margaret Bearman, please join us for this panel discussion featuring an international cast of eminent higher education researchers, who will reflect on the emergent intersections between generative AI, higher education, and workplace learning, and offer potential directions for work-integrated learning in research and practice. Our Panelists are:
Professor Michael Tomlinson, University of Southampton
Professor Rola Ajjawi, The University of British Columbia
Dave Cormier, University of Windsor
Deakin Distinguished Professor, CRADLE, Deakin University
We look forward to engaging with you at this compelling and topical panel presentation at Deakin Downtown, or online.
