How often you connect is a decision for you both to make.

Postdoctoral fellowship position: Higher and Adult Education, Stellenbosch University (South Africa)
Background to the project: PhD by publication – implications for doctoral becoming and pedagogy
In the recent years, the nature of doctoral education has undergone rapid changes in response to widening expectations regarding the outcomes of doctoral education. One of those outcomes is the diversity of formats for doctoral dissertations. The traditional monograph dissertation is no longer the only means to write a dissertation. Different formats of PhD dissertations are now being written and examined. Research has shown that examiners are now assessing more PhDs that includes publications (e.g. PhD by publication, hybrid thesis and thesis with publications). In other words, doctoral students are producing less traditional monograph dissertations. The PhD by publication is also becoming more common in South African universities, with more of these institutions considering formalising this format of PhD as an act to curb the real ills of high doctoral dropout rates, low and slow doctoral throughput rates, and the academic isolation doctoral candidates may experience. However, the question remains whether this format could and should precede the function of the PhD – that of developing scholars. It is often not clear whose interests are primarily served by publishing during the PhD – institutional stature and ranking, the supervisors’ academic credentials, or the scholarly development of the student? The PhD by publication implies a shift in the power dynamics inherent to the student-supervisor relationship, in which the traditional apprenticeship model of supervision may no longer be appropriate. As an alternative format, the PhD by publication thus demands a different doctoral pedagogy. The PhD by publication requires a change in pedagogical strategy and environmental infrastructure. At present we know very little about the pedagogical practice underlying the PhD by publication in the South African context, even though it is a common practice within certain disciplines. The question therefore arises:
What are the implications of the PhD by publication format for doctoral becoming, pedagogy and format?
This question forms the basis for a postdoctoral fellowship project that sets out to explore doctoral pedagogical practices of experienced and productive doctoral supervisors in a variety of disciplines who specialize in supervising within this format (supervisory analysis focused on implications for pedagogy); and explore doctoral students’ experiences of working on a PhD by publication (student perception analysis focused on implications for doctoral becoming).
