Invitation: HERDSA Mentoring and Coaching Support for Career Advancement
12 May 2023

Are you planning to apply for a promotion or a new job? If you are, you are invited to participate in HERDSA’s inaugural mentoring and coaching initiative to support you achieve your next promotion or next academic appointment.

Academics are facing ever-changing, demanding working conditions. Early career women, in particular, must balance the challenging demands of their personal and professional lives. Many have young families, and some are also engaged in pursuing higher degrees with the imperatives of teaching and research. Women academic migrants who have migrated from their home countries no longer have extended family support they had in their home countries. They find themselves in a highly competitive culture and must learn how to navigate the ‘system’ and expected to perform at higher levels than their colleagues.

This pilot program led by HERDSA President, Prof Kogi Naidoo, as part of her ‘Women Leaders for the World Fellowship’ award (2023-2024) is limited to a maximum of 6-8 participants. The program designed around participants’ goals will include online individual/group mentoring and coaching sessions commencing in late May 2023. Participation and time commitment is negotiable (Up to 1 hour per month for between 6 to 9 months).

For further information and to nominate for the first cohort contact Kogi via email: drkoginaidoo@gmail.com

Closing date for nominations is Friday, 12 May 2023.

Call for contributions to Voices from the Field section of IJSaP
30 June

We invite you to contribute to the fifth iteration of the International Journal of Student as Partner’s section called “Voices from the Field.” The goal of this section is to create a venue for a wide range of voices to address important questions around students-as-partners work without going through the intensive time commitment required by the submission, review, and revision processes. We want to hear your voices and put them into dialogue with one another!

We are posting this open call for thoughts on the question below, and we will organize excerpts from the responses we receive into what we hope will be a creative, engaging, accessible format to share with readers. Here is the question we invite you to address: In what ways can students-as-partners work address challenges to the mental health and wellbeing of students, staff, and faculty posed by the current realities in the wider world (socio-political, environmental, economic, etc.) that affect higher education?

Submissions should include:
• 75 to 150 words that capture your insights on how students-as-partners work addresses challenges to the mental health and wellbeing of students, staff, and faculty posed by the current realities in the wider world (socio-political, environmental, economic, etc.) that affect higher education (submissions exceeding 150 words will be returned to the author with a request to bring the contribution in line with the stated word limit); included in the 75-150 word submissions should:
o be informal but substantive explorations;
o be clearly articulated from your own position and perspective (so very briefly tell readers who you are—context, identities/background, position); and
o have an explicit focus on partnership/students-as-partners
• Optional: images/visual representations, as included in a recent iteration of Voices from the Field: https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/ijsap/article/view/5315

For the latest Voices from the Field article see: https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/ijsap/article/view/5453

We are looking for up to 30 contributions by June 12th. Please visit https://surveys.mcmaster.ca/limesurvey/index.php/724798?lang=en to submit your response to the question. If we reach this number before the deadline you will no longer be able to make a submission, so please check the link before you start writing.

This issue features the fourth iteration of ‘Voices from the Field’, which focuses on: how can students-as-partners work inform assessment?’ Recognizing that “assessment” means different things in different contexts, we invited contributors to specify what definition they are working with. We received a total of 26 submissions from 48 contributors.

You will also find 18 other manuscripts - an editorial, 7 research articles, 4 case studies, 5 reflective essays, and an opinion piece.

Altogether 55 students and 58 staff/faculty from Australia, Canada, Bahrain, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Qatar, United Kingdom and the United States have contributed to this issue.

Potential authors (both staff/faculty and students) with an idea for a research article, case study, opinion piece, reflective essay, or review are strongly encouraged to send the editors (ijsap@mcmaster.ca) a brief proposal for a research article (including empirical research articles, theoretical or conceptual articles, and literature reviews), case study, opinion piece, reflective essay, or review before writing and submitting the article (https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/ijsap/about/submissions). This will help ensure that the proposed piece fits with the focus of the journal and encourages a conversation between potential authors and the editorial board. We also welcome hearing your views about the journal.

Staff/faculty and students who have interest and experience in students as partners are encouraged to indicate their interest in joining the International Reviewer Panel by completing the Reviewer Expression of Interest Form (https://goo.gl/forms/lagSTJPSms0mTOaH3).
