CALL FOR NOMINATIONS-  HERDSA Executive 2017 - 2019

This is a call for nominations for HERDSA Executive positions for the period July 2015 – July 2017.

The current HERDSA Executive will complete a two year term at the end of June 2017 and all positions (except the President) are declared vacant.

The Executive consists of a President, Treasurer and other elected members. A call for nominations for the President-Elect position was made in March 2016 and Allan Goody was elected to this position. The President-Elect will assume the President role in July 2017. Under the Constitution, HERDSA requires a minimum of eight elected executive members in addition to those HERDSA Officers with responsibility for conference co-ordination and publications management. If the number of nominations exceeds the number of positions a ballot will be held.

The term of office for members of the Executive is two years. Individuals may serve up to three consecutive terms, after which they are no longer eligible for nomination in the next term.

The full information is available on the HERDSA website at http://herdsa.org.au/news/call-nominations-herdsa-executive-2017-2019

This information includes:
•    The names of the current members of the Executive and eligibility for re-election
•    Position description for a Member of the Executive and Portfolio descriptions
•    Details of the nomination process
•    Nomination Form
•    Draft Code of Conduct (to be ratified at the March 2017 Executive meeting)

While the constitution does not stipulate branch or regional representation, branches are encouraged to nominate a representative to provide a link between the Executive and the branch committees.

The closing date for nominations is 5:00pm AEST Friday 17th February, 2017. The new Executive will be ratified at the AGM to be held during the HERDSA conference in June 2017, Sydney, Australia.

With a number of resignations from the Executive during the current term, the Executive is now at the minimum number of elected members required by the constitution. With the possibility of some current members not re-nominating and one member not eligible, there will be a number of positions available and the opportunity for a considerable renewal of the Executive for 2017-2019.

A new Executive opens the opportunity for new insights and initiatives to maintain and enhance the benefits for HERDSA members. Don’t miss your chance to help shape our society!

10 years of curriculum initiatives in higher education in Australia - thanks and please help.

Dear Colleagues,

Special thanks to those who have contacted me already. This is of great assistance, given the remoteness of my current location.

As part of a paper I am preparing for the coming HERDSA Conference, I am attempting to review all that has occurred in Australia in relation to curriculum in higher education over the past ten years. I am systematically checking all publically available institutional websites. To support this approach, I would be grateful if any of you from institutions where some curriculum initiative (other than individual subject or course curriculum design exercises, unless these form part of an identifiable institutional approach) has occurred, could email me just a sentence or two, or a web address, outlining the initiative. In your response please indicate any information that needs to remain confidential. Such confidentiality will be strictly observed. Responses before Christmas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Owen Hicks, Emeritus Professor UWA, HERDSA life member and past president, currently on volunteer assignment in Vietnam. Please respond to: ohicks@iinet.net.au

Engaging students as partners in global learning – Roundtable and Workshop
24th January 2017

A Roundtable on 31st January 2017 will launch Wendy Green’s Engaging Students as Partners in Global Learning Fellowship http://altf.org/fellows/green-wendy/ It will bring together national and international experts and colleagues who are interested in exploring how staff and students can work together as active, critical, and agentic partners in learning and teaching in the interconnected, multicultural societies of the 21st century. The Roundtable is open to all interested staff and students.

The Roundtable will be followed by a Workshop on 1st February 2017. The Workshop is open to all those staff and students who would like to lead or contribute to small pilot projects that engage students as partners in global learning. The workshop will enable participants to reflect on and review our current practices, imagine new possibilities, generate ideas and plan pilot projects. There will be opportunities to plan joint projects with other participants at the workshop. The projects will ideally be conducted throughout 2017. Those participating in the workshop and undertaking pilot projects will be invited to present at the final event for the Fellowship, a Symposium in October 2017.

Professor Mick Healey (Healey HE Consultants, UK), Professor Betty Leask (La Trobe University) and Dr Kelly Matthews (University of Queensland) are among the national and international experts who will present and contribute to both events.

Roundtable
Date 31st January 2017
Time 10.00 – 17.00

Workshop
Date 1st February 2017
Time 9.00 – 15.00

Both events will be held at University of Tasmania, Hobart.
Registration for both events is free.

i-MELT 2017: International conference on Models of Engaged Learning and Teaching (National WIne Centre, Adelaide)

Save the date for I-MELT, an International Conference that will bring together people to share ideas, approaches, research and critiques on the Models of Engaged Learning and Teaching. These Models emerge from shifting the language of the original version- the Research Skill Development framework- so that they speak to their contexts. Existing examples include the Work Skill Development framework for WIL and the Optimise Problem Solving framework for Engineering. In recent workshops participants developed their own MELT by collaboratively adapting the core concepts to their teaching and learning context.

The call for short papers of 1500 words- for presentations, posters and workshops- will open 1 May 2017. This lead time is an opportunity for those who have used one or more of the MELT to move into research mode on their implementations for a 'research stream' of presentations. For those who are still in early days of using a MELT, the 'practice stream' will provide the opportunity to present on MELT implementations in diverse contexts.

International Summer Institute on Students as Partners in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Please join us at the 2nd International Summer Institute on ‘Students as Partners’. It will be held at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada (approx. 45 min south of Toronto Airport) from 8-11 May, 2017.

The overall aim of the International Summer Institute is to build the capacity and understanding of faculty, staff, and students to develop, design, implement, and disseminate initiatives that promote the practice of students as partners in learning and teaching in higher education.

Over 100 staff/faculty and students participated last year in roughly equal numbers. Here are some comments from participants:

“By far the most beneficial and enjoyable aspects … were the networking opportunities which led to collaboration and collective knowledge building. The international nature of these discussions really helped me to reconsider my assumptions about partnership.”

“Thanks for this most challenging and rewarding experience, a very inspiring three days! We very much appreciated both the balance between systematic impetus, drawing on the community present and focusing on our own issues.”

Staff and Faculty are encouraged, where possible, to bring a student with them, or students to bring a member of staff/faculty with them to participate in:
• One or two consecutive two-day interactive workshops; or
• A 3.5 day writing retreat

Alternatively, teams of 4-6 faculty/staff and students (at least two of each) from an institution can apply to join a 3.5 day ‘Change Institute’ at which they’ll develop a ‘students as partners’ initiative they hope to implement in the coming year.

The activities will be facilitated by a highly experienced international team of staff/faculty and students from Australia, Canada, US and UK.

One of the outcomes of last year’s Summer Institute was the establishment of the International Journal for Students as Partners (https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/ijsap), which publishes research articles, case studies, reflective essays and opinion pieces. It is run, like the Summer Institute, by an international team of faculty/staff and students.

For further details and booking please go to: https://macblog.mcmaster.ca/summer-institute/.

Here are some further comments from last year’s participants:

“The inclusion of student partners was terrific and essential. I wish we could have brought a student or two. The time to simply plan in a context with stimulation, structure, and feedback was so valuable.”

“The best thing about the Institute was having a chance to work with students and teachers from around the world and seeing the way they do things at their universities was really enlightening.”

“Overall, I found the institute to be an eye-opening experience. As a student, it allowed me to learn from perspectives of those that I don’t often hear from (professors, educational developers, curriculum developers), and provided me with a growing sense of agency over my own education.”
