Final Reminder: Call for Refereed Paper Abstracts HERDSA 2017
Closes 7 October

The HERDSA 2017 Conference Committee warmly invite you to submit abstracts for refereed papers for presentation at the 40th annual conference of Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia, to be held 27-30 June 2017 at the ICC Sydney.

The theme for the conference is Curriculum Transformation. This theme provides an opportunity to explore curriculum as a framework for student learning and experience rather than as simply an organising framework for disciplinary knowledge. It provides a platform to examine how quality sits at the centre of the process and the approaches needed to support for staff in curriculum development and innovative teaching practice.

For full details and to submit your abstract please  visit the HERDSA 2017 Conference website at www.herdsa2017.org

An Invitation to Participate in a Survey on Academics Perceptions of Teaching Excellence
17 October

Dear colleague,

We are conducting a research study entitled, ‘ Perspectives on Teaching Excellence in Higher Education’, which aims to investigate the views of academics in England and Australia on the notion of teaching excellence. We are keen to identify what skills and qualities academics like yourselves believe constitute excellent teaching and how institutional and national policies might influence your views.

The first stage of the project involves an online survey and we would really value your contribution.

Please find here the link to the survey, which also provides further details on the study: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/KP6T76D

We would be grateful if you could complete this by the 17th October 2016.

Thank you very much in advance. We appreciate the time you have taken to help with this project.

If you have any questions or comments about this survey please contact Tanya Hathaway thathaway@une.edu.au or Namrata Rao at raon@hope.ac.uk

New book on Master's supervision experiences

Experiencing Master's Supervision: Perspectives of International Students and Their Supervisors
https://www.routledge.com/products/9781138929807

Master’s degree programmes are on the rise, attracting growing numbers of international students who speak English as a second or additional language. Experiencing Master’s Supervision: Perspectives of International Students and their Supervisors explores the experiences of supervising and being supervised at Master’s level, charting the difficulties and joys of learning for second language speakers of English while based at a UK university.

The authors report the findings of a year of studying both supervisees and their supervisors in four different departments in the social sciences and humanities at a UK research-intensive university. Using a multiple case study approach, and examining supervision in its natural context, this book presents rich descriptions of five case studies: three student-supervisor dyads and two cases of individual students. Analysing rich, first-hand narratives, chapters identify key aspects of satisfaction and dissatisfaction through the eyes of the participants, focusing upon expectations, supervision styles, feedback and students’ support networks, and discussing the broader implications for university and departmental policy makers, responsible for guidelines and requirements.

This book contains important insights into the supervisory experience at Master’s level and will appeal to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of higher education, TESOL, TEFL/TESL and applied linguistics. This book will also be a useful resource for supervisors, leaders of training sessions for supervisors, and for postgraduate directors and teaching committees at universities who develop supervisory guidelines and preparatory sessions for Master’s students.
