2017 HERDSA Conference Sydney Professional Buddy Program

So you are heading to your first HERDSA conference and not sure which sessions are “not to be missed”, how to navigate the program, when to have coffee, how to find rooms, which workshops and networking meetings you should be attending, who to dance with at dinner ... It all seems overwhelming until ......

POW! BOOM! in steps your HERDSA Professional Buddy!

No, your buddy is not a superhero, just an experienced HERDSA conference delegate who is familiar with the culture of HERDSA conferences. The role of the Professional Buddy is not to hold your hand and “no”, you don’t have to “hang out with them all week” but they will assist you to connect with others and do their best to respond to your questions regarding any aspects of the conference or opportunities offered by HERDSA beyond the conference such as Fellowships, Special Interest Groups and State Networks.

Essentially, the HERDSA Professional Buddy Program is designed to make you feel welcome and included in all HERDSA Conference activities. We have learnt from last year’s evaluation of the Program that buddies benefit most when they connect prior to the conference (via email or phone) and meet early in the conference schedule. There is a range of potential meeting times including during coffee breaks, receptions, dinners, or expeditions. Many of last year’s buddies attended each other’s presentations. How often you connect is a decision for you both to make.

Would you like a HERDSA Professional Buddy with whom to connect at the conference in Sydney?
OR
Would you like to be a HERDSA Professional Buddy who connects with and welcomes those new to HERDSA at the conference in Sydney?

We hope to accommodate all those new to HERDSA but participation is dependent on how many professional buddies (experienced conference delegates) are available. Those new to HERDSA will be matched on a first-in first-matched basis. So ... If you wish to be allocated a HERDSA Professional Buddy or wish to be a HERDSA Professional Buddy for the 2017 Sydney Conference complete this sign up form at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N3RD8G3

Deadline Friday 16th June 2017. You will receive an email on Tuesday 20th June 2017 to inform you of your Buddy’s details!

Chair, New Scholars Portfolio, HERDSA Executive

HERD Special Issue 2018 - Call for papers

Contributions to Higher Education Research & Development's 2018 Special Issue. The goal of this Special Issue, edited by Hamish Coates and kelly Matthews is to refine debate on new understandings of ‘student success’, and new epistemologies and sources of evidence for investigating and conceptualising it. We seek contributions that encompass practical, conceptual, and theoretical concerns; range from pure scholarship to more applied insights; and draw on a plurality of methodological approaches.

The UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and the Higher Education Academy (HEA)
Wed 07 June 12.00-1.30pm (Massey University, Wellington - also on live stream)

Presentation by Alison Robinson-Canham (Assistant Director – Professional Learning, HEA)

The debate on qualifications/accreditation for tertiary teachers in NZ has been ongoing since at least 1999. A similar lengthy process has characterised Australian higher education discussions on the quality of teaching, but neither country has implemented a national process for the professional recognition of tertiary teaching.

The recent Productivity Commission report on ‘new models of tertiary education’ contained recommendation 14.7—that NZ should develop frameworks of standards for tertiary teaching to recognise and reward capability, and that these should incorporate effective modes of teaching for Māori and Pacific students. It is now timely to take a good look at successful international models and consider how they might work in NZ.

The UK introduced their Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and established the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in 2003 to provide an accreditation scheme for university teachers. There are now over 80,000 fellows of the HEA in the UK, with increasing numbers in Australia (800) and NZ (78), and further uptake in 80 countries across the world.

Alison Robinson-Canham will introduce the key features of the UK approach, examine some research on the effectiveness of standards frameworks, and answer questions from the audience. The aim is to raise awareness of this global model and promote debate on its applicability in NZ.

New Blog - Engaging students as partners in global learning

The blog provides a space for new ways of thinking about the possibilities and challenges of ‘partnership’ between students and staff, as they engage in learning and teaching in, and for an interconnected, globalised world. As one of a series of activities supported by an Australian Learning & Teaching Fellowship, 'Engaging students as partners in global learning', the blog will reflect the fellowship’s overall aim: to engage staff and students as active, critical, and agentic partners in the learning and teaching practices in our local/global contexts. Anyone interested in contributing to the blog, please contact Wendy Green w.j.green@utas.edu.au
