Call for Expressions of Interest to host 2018 ISSOTL Conference

ISSOTL is accepting expressions of interest to host the 2018 ISSOTL annual conference. The ISSOTL Board has stated a preference for a conference location outside North America in 2018. ISSOTL works closely with local hosts to organize and run each annual conference. Hosts typically provide intellectual leadership to the conference by articulating the theme, organizing the proposal selection/review process, and constructing the conference program in collaboration with the Society, as well as identifying the location for the conference and managing all local arrangements. ISSOTL supports the hosts by offering guidance, networking, and support, as well as supplying the online system for proposal selection/review and for collecting conference registrations.

Expressions of interest must be emailed to admin@issotl.com by September 4, 2016, and addressed to Katarina Mårtensson, co-‐chair of the Convenings Committee and co-‐president-‐elect of ISSOTL.

Details of expression of interest format and more information is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ymrk3ipw85mk2s/Call%20for%20Expressions%20of%... "

An Invitation to Participate in a Survey on Law Academics Work and Experiences

A survey is being conducted of law academics in Australia and the UK, to consider individual experiences of working in legal academia, and the institutional impact of how academic work is structured. This survey is part of a collaborative international study, which will survey both legal academics (including permanent, sessional and contract staff) and law faculty administrators (such as heads of school or executive administrative officers). It is being conducted as part of a project funded by the UK Legal Education Research Network, and led by Dr Alysia Blackham of Melbourne Law School and the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge, and Dr Shelda Debowski, a Senior Consultant in Higher Education Development. This survey will offer important insights into how legal academics are operating in a contemporary higher education environment, and how they can best be supported in their role.

We invite you to participate in the survey if you are a law academic or responsible for law academics. It should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed online:
·         For law academic staff: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/legalacademic
·         For administrators / deans: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/legalmanager

If you have any questions or comments about this survey, please contact Alysia Blackham at alysia.blackham@unimelb.edu.au or Shelda Debowski at shelda@debowski.com.au."

APFEI academic integrity grants

The Asia Pacific Forum on Educational Integrity (APFEI) is offering three new grants for projects related to academic integrity in higher education. The grants will be awarded to proposals for a small research project, the development of teaching and learning resources and/or an event relevant to education about academic integrity education or the management of academic misconduct. Successful applicants must provide a report and resources for publication on the APFEI website and will be encouraged to present their project at the next APFEI conference or symposium.

Both APFEI members and non-members may apply for these grants, and all successful applicants will be made honorary members for a one year period (or an additional year if already a member). The two types of APFEI grants offered are:

  • Commissioned project:  One grant of AUD$2000 will be awarded to a project related to research and/or resource development about contract cheating.
  • Research, event and/or resource development projects: Two grants of AUD$1000 each will be awarded to academic integrity project proposals on an open topic, as long as it is clearly relevant to current issues in the field of academic integrity. These projects may involve the development of research, teaching and learning resources, or to fund inter-institutional events or workshops.

The selection criteria require that a grant application will:

  • be on a topic that is clearly relevant to current research and approaches to academic integrity education and/or management of academic misconduct;
  • involve an original or fresh approach, that is clearly distinguished from existing resources or previous research and events;
  • include a rationale for the project, including a short literature review, methodology, timeline and anticipated outcomes; and
  • include a justification of expenses and a detailed budget breakdown.

The closing date for applications is the 30th September 2016. For more information, please visit the APFEI website at http://www.apfei.edu.au/ or email:  contact@apfei.edu.au

Reframing the PhD for Australia's future universities

The OLT grant 'Reframing the PhD for Australia’s future universities’ (led by Professor Simon Barrie, PVC Learning Transformations, Western Sydney University) now has a website. The project is a response to an initial brief inviting questions about the state/nature of teaching development in the PhD (prompted by an OLT commissioned piece by Belinda Probert) but has extended further — into a way of thinking about doctoral education prompted once again by Golde and Walker’s (2006) framing of stewardship (and curriculum).

Two Briefing Papers are now available at the website:
•    Teacher development strategies and PhD programs
•    Stewardship: a way of analysing, integrating and providing intention to the curriculum of the Australian PhD.

We are using the hashtag #reframingphd on twitter.

Alongside Simon Barrie, the team includes Professor Keith Trigwell as the Project Manager, Dr Tai Peseta and A/Professor Peter McCallum (USydney), Dr Jeanette Fyffe (La Trobe), Professor Joe Graffam (Deakin), Dr Alistair Kwan (Auckland), and Dr Lee Partridge (Western Australia). Dr Margaret Kiley is the Project Evaluator.

Visit the website at: http://reframingphd.com.au/.

We welcome your comments and we look forward to taking these ideas out into the higher education community in early 2017.

Cheers, Tai (on behalf of the team)
