Teaching in Blended Learning Environments: Creating and Sustaining Communities of Inquiry

Professor Norman Vaughan
Department of Education, Mount Royal University, Canada

According to a survey conducted over ten years ago, more than 80% of higher education institutions in the United States offer courses in a blended format (Arabasz, Boggs & Baker, 2003). In the words of Gladwell (2000), we have gone over the “tipping point”; blended learning has become an educational epidemic. The three societal forces that have converged (the perfect wave) to drive this epidemic are technology, financial constraints, and quality concerns. The blended approaches to learning that have arisen to address these forces have led to three major non-contradictory affordances – effectiveness, efficiency and convenience. The result is an era of engagement and sustainable communities of inquiry. This session will provide participants with an opportunity to share and discuss strategies for designing, facilitating, and leading blended learning courses and programs.

Norman Vaughan, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He has co-authored the books Teaching in Blended Learning Environments: Creating and Sustaining Communities of Inquiry (2013) and Blended Learning in Higher Education (2008) and he has published a series of articles on blended learning and faculty development. Dr. Vaughan is the Co-founder of the Blended Online Design Network (BOLD), a member of the Community of Inquiry Research Group, the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning and he is on the Editorial Boards of numerous national and international journals.

Towards Teaching Culture: Peter Felten and Mathew Ouellett Keynotes for Windsor-Oakland International TL Conference
May 2, 3, 4, 2017

Hello everyone!

Should you able to join us in Southern Canada this spring, we would be very happy to welcome you as we explore, support, and celebrate the enhancement of a culture that values teaching. We have a phenomenal set of keynotes and sessions, plus the opportunity to join a cohort that continues discussion over the conference.

University of Windsor-Oakland University International Teaching & Learning Conference, May 3-4
International Forum on Teaching Evaluation, May 2
University of Windsor, Windsor, ON, Canada
Conference Website: uwindsor.ca/tlconf

Valuing Teaching: What Matters Most?
Peter Felten, Assistant Provost, Teaching and Learning, and Executive Director of the Centre for Engaged Learning, at Elon University, will kick off the event, Wednesday, May 3, in an interactive keynote exploring six core themes that matter most for student success: learning, relationships, expectations, alignment, improvement, and leadership (Felten et al., 2016). The group will then critically consider what each of us can do, no matter what our context and role, to cultivate a generative culture of learning and teaching.

Culture in Higher Education: What Accelerates Change?
Mathew L. Ouellett, Associate Provost and Director of the Office for Teaching and Learning at Wayne State University, will present the closing plenary, Thursday, May 4. How can campus community members (e.g., faculty, staff, students and senior academic leaders) work in concert to effect culture change to better bring to life their strategic goals, values, and beliefs? In this highly interactive keynote, participants will reflect on and apply a model of institutional change, take stock of their institution’s current initiatives to enhance a culture that values teaching, share strategies that accelerate such change across our campuses, and identify possible next steps.

Pre-Conference: International Forum on Teaching Evaluation
A special feature this year is the day-long International Forum on Teaching Evaluation, May 2, 2017, where speakers from universities across Canada and the US will examine the specific dynamics and cultures in post-secondary institutions that impact how they define quality in teaching and how they implement effective methods in evaluating teaching. Peter Felten will offer the keynote presentation: Focusing on Assessment for Improvement: Theory and Practice.
