The first year experience - helping students learn

Christine Hogan, Eamon Murphy and Kerry Pedigo
Curtin University of Technology
This paper is based on a CAUT Project entitled "Through Students' Eyes" in which we researched the problems first year students face and the strategies they use to manage the transition to learning effectively at university. The presentation will tell the 'story so far' of our project to involve students in the design of a workbook and the production of three videos. As the project is in progress we will provide video clips of students to stimulate discussion. In the interactive phase of the session participants will be invited to give feedback and discuss questions e.g. What do you do? Why? What have you tried? What doesn't work? What works?
